How to Disconnect the Gas for Your Water Heater
There are times you have to shut down one of your appliances or systems to protect your home. One of the more common examples is having to cut off a gas water heater from its gas supply. It might be something as simple as disconnecting the gas so you can replace the water heater. However, you might also need to shut off the gas because flammable gas is leaking and could cause a house fire. If you don’t know how to shut off your water heater’s gas, we tell you what to do.
Important safety warning
These instructions are meant to cover dealing with small gas leaks. With larger gas leaks, you should take CenterPoint Energy’s advice and leave your home. Leave on foot to somewhere safer, and call 911 and CenterPoint Energy only when you’re a safe distance away from your home.
How to turn off the gas for your water heater
There are two places in your home where you can turn off the water heater’s gas. For the water heater, there’s a shutoff valve near the water heater. However, for emergencies, you should shut off the gas completely at the gas meter outside. Both methods are important, but the gas meter is a safer option.
For the gas meter, you’ll want to find the gas shutoff valve nearby. Take a wrench and turn the valve 90° clockwise to shut off the gas. Meanwhile, water heaters have a single valve handle on the gas pipe to control its gas intake. Turn the handle 90° so it’s perpendicular to the pipe, and the gas should shut off. You’ll know the gas is off when your water heater’s burner turns off. In any of these situations, if you fear a gas leak, call your gas company to schedule a free inspection.
